It was sooo hot.
This was an understatement.
Marley drug her feet along the dusty earth, her hair uncomfortable and damp against the back of her neck. The high-noon sun beat down mercilessly and it was an effort in and of itself to keep going.
But Marley did because there was nothing else to do.
Wherever they were, someone had forgotten the trees. The tallest foliage in this cracked wasteland were a few scraggly excuses for bushes that barely reached past her knees. The lack of available shade was frustrating and very irritating to Marley, so much so that she had started up a stream of complaints to her current companion, which happened to be a small blue mew.
"I'm sooo tired. Why couldn't I have gotten a motorcycle like the other Officer Jenny's? I feel like there was some serious discrimination back in Kanto," the young officer grumbled to herself.
Blue seemed to be having no problems with the temperature. He floated next to Marley as serenely as ever, just content to actually be going somewhere.
"It isn't that bad. See? There's a nice breeze heading this way."
Marley looked up just in time to shield her eyes against a small dust cloud that rolled over them. However, she forgot to close her mouth and was spitting out dust for a whole minute and could still taste the grit under her tongue.
"Ugh! There's dust on my clothes, in my hair and now I'm eating it for lunch. I swear if we ever find civilization I'm going to bathe for a week!"
Blue couldn't help but giggle uncontrollably at Marley's ranting but he did have a few solutions to their problem. Maybe too many at that.
"I think I know what to do. Just sit back and watch."
He floated a little ways away from Marley and in a brief flash of light, his form expanded in width and length until a large rapidash was pawing the dusty earth where the little shiny mew had been. Well, he would've been a perfect replica of a rapidash, but this one just happened to be sporting a blue mane and tail. Still, it was quite a nice effect.
"Well, don't just stand there, get on!" the rapidash scolded her impatiently.
Marley sized up Blue's new form warily.
"Are you sure this is safe? You look a little... um... tall."
"What were you expecting, a nidorino? I thought a rapidash would be the most comfortable for a human. Besides, think of how much faster this will be!"
He did have a point and her feet were already beginning to ache. She approached the rapidash, who kneeled down to allow her to clamber onto his back. She had never actually ridden a pokemon before and she didn't find much to hang onto. She settled for linking her arms around his neck, especially when Blue got to his feet.
"Okay, here we go!"
Marley let out a strangled screech as Blue darted forward and started running at break-neck speed. She could hardly see anything due to the flashing blue flames which billowed around her in all directions. The pokemon's gate left her bouncing and sliding every-which-way and she held on for dear life just so she wouldn't slip off the rapidash's smooth back.
"I think you could slow down a little!" Marley yelled against the hot wind that was rushing by her face, succeeding only in getting yet another mouthful of dust.
But Blue wasn't listening. He was too caught up in the speed and strength of the form he had taken on. Did it really matter that he was blinded by the dust kicked up by his own hooves? This burnt pancake of land was flat. What could he possibly run into?
Oh, the possibilities were endless.
