Coming from a farm, Kennedy was quite used to small, quaint quietness. That summed up Acorn Town in... well, a nutshell. Kennedy laughed softly to herself at her own joke, knowing that that was quite a lame thing to do but choosing not to care. Armed with a white slingpack and garbed in a simple pair of jeans, black tank top, and a slim lilac vest, Kennedy felt positively prepared to take on the world... with a new Pokemon by her side, of course.
The path to the laboratory was simple, matching the town in which in was housed in. Kennedy was quite grateful for this because she wasn't exactly the best with directions. She could read a map and go by landmarks, but she wasn't gifted with an inner compass like many other Pokemon trainers she had met throughout her life seemed to be.
After a few minutes of walking, the lab dropped into Kennedy's line of sight. It was a medium sized, clean looking building with tall trees arching overhead. Pretty peaceful place, she mused. As she drew nearer to the doors, Kennedy couldn't help but wonder what the proper etiquette was for all of this. Did she waltz right into the lab or did she knock?
After a moment's deliberation and lip chewing, Kennedy raised her knuckle to the door and rapped three, sharp times.

At the sound of knocking, a woman rushed towards the front door before anyone else did. With a freshly pressed lab coat and black hair neatly tied up, the new assistant was eager to finally give out a Pokemon to an aspiring trainer. Though, it wasn’t hard to beat everyone since most of them were currently preoccupied with the birds on the loose. Yup, a few newly hatched Starly were now using the lab's main room as a takeoff zone. One of them flew across her vision, then landed on its rear and scooted across the floor. “Poor baby,” she said. “I’ll help you out in a second.”
It was pretty noisy in the lab right now; not the best time for an impressionable young person to be introduced to Pokemon, but it would have to do. Pulling the door open, she smiled at the blonde trainer before her. “Please come in!” she said, gesturing. The lab assistant was prepared for someone more along the lines of a hyper, wide-eyed 10 year old, but it pleased her to know that this young lady seemed to have a mature manner about her. “Please don't mind the Starly. Are you here for your first Pokemon?”

At the invitation to come inside the lab, Kennedy smiled graciously and stepped over the threshold, making sure to close the door behind her. She was rather surprised that the interior of the lab was not exactly... quiet. Upon further observation, the racket seemed to be caused by some young looking Starly all happily scooting around on the floor or flying. "Are they babies?" Kennedy asked curiously, watching the slow progress of the Starly who had fallen to the floor moments before she entered the lab. The little brown birds were cute, but flying types weren't really Kennedy's favorite.
At the woman's question, Kennedy turned her attention back to her, nodding. "Yep, getting a Pokemon is what I had in mind. My name is Kennedy O'Ryan, by the way. My family just moved here from Johto, so if you're wondering why I'm a little old to be going through the first Pokemon process, that's why." Kennedy didn't particularly feel like going into the fact that it was family farm work that had kept her at home for so long; she was sure that the lab assistant had more pressing matters at hand than listening to her life story, anyway.

The assistant tilted her head, looking down at the squabbling Pokemon fondly. “Yes, they just hatched,” she answered smiling. “Don’t worry, you’ll be getting a Pokemon a bit more mature than these.”
Motioning for the trainer to follow her, the woman walked down one of the back hallways. “Oh well, welcome to the region!” she called over her shoulder. “That’s wonderful that you’re following through on a goal. And I wouldn’t worry, we’ve had older visit us to start their journey,” she said smiling.
Heading into a room, she listed the Pokemon aloud in case the trainer was unsure of the starters the offered. “We have Machop, Starly, Oddish, Houndour, Ralts, Lotad, and Mareep,” she said. “Which of them would you like?” she asked, putting the pokeballs out on the counter.

"Aw, well they're awfully cute, but it's also good to hear that whatever Pokemon I get won't be in diapers... well, metaphorically in diapers, anyway." Kennedy wasn't sure that the 'metaphorically' part was necessary; after all, who had ever heard of any Pokemon, hatchling or not, wearing diapers?
Kennedy couldn't help but smile in small relief that she wasn't the oldest person who had come to this lab seeking to start their Pokemon adventure. Of course, if wouldn't really affect anything if she was, it was just nice not to be. "Thanks for the welcome. It's really beautiful around here. I didn't know what to expect when we moved, but I'm happy with what the region's like."
Now came the hard part: choosing which of these delightful Pokemon would accompany Kennedy along her journey. She placed a fingertip to her lips in thought, looking intently at the Poke Balls laid out before her. She could definitely rule out Starly for aformentioned reasons, but that was really the only Pokemon she could definitely say no to.
After just a moment more of consideration she said, "I think I'm going to go with Oddish. I like Grass types."

The assistant smiled. “That’s a wonderful choice,” she said, handing the Pokeball to Kennedy. “I’m sure you’ll have a great adventure with Oddish.” She pulled out a drawer under the counter and picked out a few other supplies. “Now, you’ll also be getting a Kyoto Pokedex, which you can use to document your encounters in the region….” She pointed out the important buttons on the small metal gadget.
“And, here are a few pokeballs to get your team started,” she said, looking at the trainer. “Best of luck to you!”
Congratulations! You have received:
OddishLv. 5 Moves: Absorb, Sweet Scent
Kyoto Region Pokedex Three Standard Pokeballs

The thought that the relatively small sphere in Kennedy's hand contained what would surely become her trustiest partner was absolutely staggering. The girl's green eyes were transfixed on the orb in silent wonder. Maybe an Oddish was just some common weed to a lot of people; that was okay. This Oddish was Kennedy's first real Pokemon and as such she would probably never discover any greater partner than what this Oddish would be.
This wonderfully special Oddish needed a name... but first Kennedy needed to determine if the small Grass type was a boy or girl. With almost shaky hands, Kennedy double tapped the button in the middle of the ball, fighting against the urge to wince at the brilliant white light that emerged. As the light cleared, Kennedy's Oddish became apparent.
The small purple plant Pokemon looked curiously up to Kennedy its head (and therefore its whole body) tilted to the side. "Odd?" it queried, edging slightly closer to the tall blonde. Kennedy nodded almost feverishly, a smile quickly spreading across her face. "Yes, I'm your trainer now and I assure you, we're going to be great friends."
The small Pokemon made a happy little chirruping noise in response and assumed a cuddling position with Kennedy's leg. The girl laughed and said shortly thereafter, "You seem to be pretty happy... Hmm. Is the name Joy suitable to you?" The little purple Pokemon gave another happy chirrup; apparently, Kennedy's Oddish was a female, which suited her just fine.
She turned back to the helpful lab assistant, knowing that she would never forget this monumental moment. "Thank you so much. Really, I mean it." The items that the lab assistant gave Kennedy found their way into the white pleather slingpack she carried after everything had been properly explained.
The girl could have been on her way to say something when a resounding crash sounded throughout the laboratory. A baby Starly hopped guiltily away from a pile of broken glass, chirping meekly. "Well... I guess I'd better let you get back to your work, then. Joy and I will be on our way now. Thanks again!" With a grateful little nod to the lab assistant, Kennedy turned toward the door and exited, her new Oddish toddling hurriedly along behind her.
